In December 2025, a massive federal immigration enforcement operation, "Operation Metro Surge," was launched in Minnesota by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, with increased, often violent, activity continuing into January 2026. This surge involved thousands of armed agents and led to major, controversial raids, including the fatal shooting of Renée Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old American woman on January 7, 2026, and the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a US citizen who worked as a nurse on January 24th.
